By Mark DaCosta- The increasing cost of food in Guyana has reached a crisis point, prompting a range of responses from political factions, most notably the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Coalition. The coalition has articulated its concern over the dire living conditions faced by many Guyanese households, as various media outlets corroborate rising food prices and the urgent need for tangible solutions.

The APNU Coalition has presented a comprehensive action plan aimed at alleviating the financial pressures on citizens affected by soaring living costs. Key components of this plan focus on four main areas: raising incomes, lowering household expenses, enhancing social safety nets, and fostering a more robust economic environment. Among the proposed measures is a substantial annual grant of $100,000 for every adult, coupled with a $120,000 allowance for each child’s childcare costs, aimed at providing direct financial support to families in need.

Additionally, the coalition suggests implementing free utilities for households that do not consume large amounts of electricity or water, which would further ease the financial burden on low-income families. The proposal also includes a significant salary increase of up to 35 percent for essential workers such as teachers, nurses, public servants, and security personnel, recognising the vital roles they play in our society and ensuring they are compensated fairly.

To further support families, the coalition plans to introduce a tax-free income threshold of $400,000, making it easier for individuals and families to keep more of their hard-earned money. Furthermore, they advocate for a monthly financial provision of $50,000 for job seekers and students pursuing higher education, facilitating opportunities for employment and academic advancement.

As the coalition shares these proposals, they emphasise that these are not empty promises but rather practical solutions that have been carefully costed and planned. They highlight the urgent need for action, critiquing the current administration’s response — particularly Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo’s dismissal of the coalition’s proposals during a recent press conference. Jagdeo’s criticism, the coalition asserts, provides no tangible alternative to addressing the escalating food prices. Instead, APNU urges that “Guyanese need action, not excuses.”

The rising cost of living has become a critical issue that demands immediate attention, the coalition says. The APNU Coalition says it strives to ensure that the benefits of our nation’s abundant oil wealth reach every citizen, not just the elite.

As discussions surrounding the cost-of-living crisis continue, the APNU Coalition has pledged to champion initiatives that could genuinely transform the economic landscape for ordinary citizens. With their focus firmly on the welfare of families, they aim to be a voice of change and progress. The urgency of their proposals echoes the collective sentiment of many Guyanese, who are seeking real, effective solutions to a problem that affects them daily.

In a time of crisis, the need for a robust and actionable plan is paramount. The APNU Coalition says it seeks to lead this charge, advocating for policies that promise to uplift and empower, creating a brighter future for all citizens.
