A sweeping package of United States (U.S.) sanctions targeting a wide range of individuals in Guyana has reportedly been finalised and is expected to be announced imminently. According to a source familiar with the matter, the sanctions have already been approved by U.S. authorities and will mark one of the most significant foreign policy actions taken against the South American nation in recent years.
HGP Nightly News reports that the list of individuals facing sanctions includes senior members of the Guyana Police Force, Ministers of the governing People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Government, high-profile businessmen, employees of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), and individuals believed to have direct links to the country’s criminal underworld.
Those targeted are alleged to have played central roles in organised crime, transnational drug trafficking, money laundering, extra-judicial killings, and public sector corruption. The sanctions, expected to be both economic and diplomatic in nature, are intended to disrupt illicit networks and hold accountable those undermining the rule of law in Guyana.
The news has already begun to ripple through political and business circles in Georgetown, with sources indicating that the U.S. has compiled substantial evidence against the named individuals over the course of several years, through its regional intelligence apparatus and international law enforcement partnerships.
While there has been no official statement yet from the U.S. Embassy in Georgetown or Guyanese authorities, anticipation is high that the sanctions announcement will provoke strong reactions from the government, possibly straining diplomatic relations further.
The move comes amid rising domestic and international concerns over corruption, governance, and security in Guyana, especially as the country prepares for its upcoming General and Regional Elections.
This is a developing story.
