GEORGETOWN, Guyana, June 29, 2026 – Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, is encouraging homeowners, developers and builders to place greater emphasis on energy efficiency and sustainable construction practices as Guyana’s housing sector continues to expand.
Speaking at a seminar hosted by the Central Housing and Planning Authority during the ongoing International Building Expo 2026 at the National Stadium in Providence, the minister said the conversation about housing development must extend beyond simply constructing houses.
“When you are building your home, you have to look at energy efficiency,” Minister Croal told participants, noting that factors such as building materials, home design and construction regulations all play an important role in creating more sustainable and cost-effective homes.
The minister said that with the government’s aggressive housing programme resulting in thousands of house lot allocations across the country, there is a growing need for homeowners and businesses to adopt building practices that reduce energy consumption and lower household expenses.
He stressed that energy-efficient homes can help families manage utility costs while also contributing to Guyana’s broader efforts to build climate resilience and promote sustainable development.
Also addressing the seminar was Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Energy Agency, Mahendra Sharma, who said that although Guyana’s development trajectory is expected to bring greater access to electricity and lower energy costs, consumers must also pay attention to how they use energy.
Dr. Sharma encouraged households and businesses to adopt more efficient appliances and energy-conscious practices, arguing that reducing consumption will remain an important component of the country’s energy future.
The seminar formed part of activities under the International Building Expo 2026, which has placed significant emphasis on modern construction techniques, sustainability and improving the quality of housing available to Guyanese families.
