The U.S. Embassy in Georgetown has released an important statement regarding overseas voting, reminding U.S. citizens living in Guyana of the upcoming deadlines and procedures for absentee voting in the United States.

Voter Registration and Deadlines

Voter registration deadlines vary by state, with some requiring voters to register as early as 30 days before an election. U.S. citizens overseas are urged to check the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) website at www.FVAP.gov to confirm their state’s specific deadline. The U.S. Embassy encourages all overseas voters, whether first-time or experienced, to complete the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) each year to ensure their eligibility for absentee voting.

Ballot Distribution and Verification

For those who have already submitted their FPCA in 2024, the Embassy advises checking the status of absentee ballot requests through state-specific voter registration websites or by contacting local election offices. The FPCA ensures that absentee ballots will be sent out at least 45 days before the election, so voters should receive them soon.

Returning Your Ballot

Once voters have completed their absentee ballot, they can return it free of charge by dropping it off at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate, or mailing it directly to their local election office. The Embassy recommends sending ballots as soon as possible, noting that transit time to the U.S. can take up to 20 days. Ballots should be returned no later than October 4 to ensure they arrive on time.

Absentee Voting Week Event

To facilitate the process, the U.S. Embassy in Georgetown will host a Voting Town Hall at Cara Lodge on September 20 as part of Absentee Voting Week. This event will offer voting assistance, and further details will be announced later this week.

For those unable to attend, the Embassy is offering ongoing voting assistance and ballot drop-off services from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on weekdays.

Key Reminders for Overseas Voters:

  1. Complete the FPCA: This allows U.S. citizens to register and request absentee ballots in one step. Local election officials will send absentee ballots for all federal elections within the calendar year.
  2. Submit the FPCA: Voters can submit their FPCA free of charge at the Embassy or via mail, depending on their state’s regulations. Some states also accept FPCAs by email.
  3. Return Your Ballot: Ballots can be returned either through the Embassy or via mail, but voters are encouraged to act early due to potential delays. Friends or family members can also drop off ballots on behalf of voters.

For more information, voters are encouraged to visit the FVAP website for downloadable postage-paid envelope templates and other voting resources.

Why Your Vote Matters

The Embassy stresses that every vote counts, with many U.S. elections being decided by small margins. U.S. citizens are encouraged to ensure their voices are heard by completing the necessary steps to vote absentee.

For any questions or assistance, U.S. citizens can contact the U.S. Embassy Georgetown’s Voting Assistance Officer at +592-225-4900 ext 4222 or via email at acsgeorge@state.gov.

Now is the time to exercise your right to vote from overseas!
