South Florida’s Juneteenth calendar will be headlined by a landmark cultural showcase as Next Weekend Productions, Inc., in partnership with the City of Lauderhill, stages the 5th Annual “Imagination Unchained” Concert on Saturday, June 20 at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center.
According to a press release issued by the organisers, the event—now in its fifth year—has evolved into one of the region’s signature Juneteenth celebrations, combining live performance, visual art, and storytelling into what is described as a “multi-sensory journey” celebrating “250 years of Black imagination, resilience, and brilliance.”
Juneteenth traces its origins to June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to declare the end of slavery—more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. It marked the final, long-delayed enforcement of freedom for enslaved African Americans in the Confederacy. What began as a moment of overdue justice has grown into a powerful national observance of freedom, resilience, and Black cultural achievement, formally recognised as a U.S. federal holiday in 2021.
“This one-night-only, one-of-its-kind Juneteenth celebration is not to be missed,” the release stated.

The programme will feature a diverse lineup of performers, including vocalist Cande Rivers, whose tributes to icons such as Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Dionne Warwick, Etta James and Roberta Flack are expected to energise the audience.
Also featured are Marlo Vashti, a jazz vocalist, poet and actress known for intimate performances; Alexander Star, an Emmy-nominated hip-hop and R&B artist focused on social change; and host Tre Henderson.
Adding a visual dimension, Guyanese-born South Florida artist Dionne H.E. Polite will showcase works that translate Caribbean life into bold, vibrant artistic expressions.
Organisers said the event will deliver “a dynamic fusion of live music, poetry, and visual art,” including graffiti installations and an interactive LED storytelling gallery exploring the origins of Black music.
The evening will also recognise recipients of the Patra Baker Technology Scholarship, linking cultural celebration with educational empowerment.
Hosted by the City of Lauderhill and powered by Next Weekend Productions, Inc., the event is supported by corporate and media partners, including BankUnited and iHeartRadio personalities, aimed at creating what organisers describe as an immersive and high-energy atmosphere.
Attendees can choose between a VIP experience—with pre-show reception, premium access and priority seating—and standard admission, which includes the full cultural programme.
Next Weekend Productions, a minority and woman-owned company with more than 20 years of experience, said its mission is to create events that “move people,” strengthen community bonds, and promote well-being through culture and creativity.
“We believe artistic, spiritual, and cultural events are living, breathing experiences that tell stories, connect communities, and uplift the human spirit,” the release noted.
Juneteenth continues to expand into a national moment of reflection and celebration, and “Imagination Unchained” stands out as a flagship cultural event—bringing together history, artistry, and community in a single evening designed to honour freedom and inspire future generations.
In that spirit, the production goes beyond performance, serving as a living reminder that the struggle for freedom did not end in 1865—it continues through culture, memory, and collective expression, carried forward by each new generation determined to shape its own future.
