OP-ED: Dharamlall’s Continuing Influence Alarming; Disregard for Rights of Young Diplomat, Disrespect of Sitting Minister Hugh Todd

In a disturbing turn of events, the recent alleged actions of disgraced former Minister Nigel Dharamlall highlight a dangerous trend in Guyana that should alarm every citizen. Dharamlall, leveraging his political influence, allegedly orchestrated the arrest of Sharmayne Balram, a dedicated young diplomat and his alleged former fiancée, on fabricated charges. This incident not only underscores a massive overreach and abuse of power but also signals a complete disregard for the authority of Minister Hugh Todd of Foreign Affairs, under whom Ms. Balram serves.

Ms. Balram, a mid-level career diplomat, has served Guyana with distinction since joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in December 2015. Holding a Master’s Degree in Economics and a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations, she has represented Guyana at prestigious international forums, including the United Nations and the Human Rights Council. Her credentials and dedication are beyond reproach, making the baseless accusations and her subsequent treatment all the more appalling.

“I am profoundly disturbed, disgusted, and outraged by the baseless accusations being leveled against me by disgraced former Minister of Local Government, Nigel Dharamlall,” Ms. Balram stated. “These fabricated claims are a direct assault on my character, my career, and my professional integrity.”

The fact that Dharamlall could use his political clout to allegedly send police into Ms. Balram’s office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to seize her devices, and then personally escort her to the Criminal Investigation Department like a common criminal, is deeply troubling. This blatant misuse of power is an affront to Ms. Balram’s dignity and a stark reminder of the perils faced by individuals who stand in the way of politically powerful figures.

Dharamlall’s alleged actions reflect a broader pattern of abuse. The silence of the nation as the PPP government meted out past abuses to Black women, Indigenous women, and LGBT women was deafening. Many women within the PPP have defended such actions, though exceptions like Minister Priya Manickchand, who walked away from Dharamlall, are rare and commendable.

Ms. Balram’s ordeal should serve as a wake-up call to all Guyanese. The misuse of political power to target and intimidate individuals, especially women, is a severe violation of human rights and democratic principles. It erodes the very fabric of our society and undermines the rule of law. The fact that Dharamlall’s actions were aimed at a young, accomplished diplomat is indicative of how low our nation has sunk.

“This incident reflects Dharamlall’s last desperate attempt to deflect attention from his own troubling reputation as an alleged sexual predator and disgraced former Minister,” Ms. Balram continued. “My lawyers will steadfastly defend my rights as a professional woman who lives her life with decency, dignity, and integrity.”

The call for accountability is clear. “Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum, who facilitated this abuse of power, must be held responsible.  The actions of Blanhum and Dharamlall are not only unethical but a threat to the democratic principles upon which Guyana is built”, said CGID President Rickford Burke

As citizens, we must demand better. We must stand against the misuse of power and ensure that those who abuse their positions are brought to justice. This is not just about Sharmayne Balram; it is about protecting the rights and dignity of all Guyanese. It is about safeguarding the future of our nation and upholding the values of justice and equality.

In the words of Ms. Balram, “I remain committed to service to my country with my dignity and integrity intact.” We should all strive to uphold these principles and work towards a Guyana where such abuses of power are not tolerated. Let this incident be a catalyst for change and a reminder that the true strength of our nation lies in the respect and dignity we afford to every citizen.
