What do people say about you? What do they think about your character, your behaviour, or your mindset? Would persons agree in saying that you represent yourself well through your speech and/or attire? Would they say that you treat others with respect, dignity, and compassion?

You may say that the conclusions in the minds of many about your character don’t matter, however, allow me to rescue you from that mental dungeon of folly.

You see, while we should never let the opinions of others be quick to determine how we should live, we must understand that there is value in perception. Moreover, our success is directly connected to the sentiments of others and that is why personal branding is important.
Understand that your brand is your reputation. It is what people think and how they feel about you. When you sufficiently fathom this principle, you will be better positioned for success.

In our hearts of hearts, we all value the opinions of others. Whether they come from friends, family, strangers, or acquaintances the theories of other people about our behaviour, how we speak, what we look like etc. matter.

Focusing on your brand helps you to decipher – with more clarity, the valuable conclusions from the comments that are of little worth. Additionally, purposefully, and intentionally carving your brand strengthens your visual image and helps you to control the messages you wish to be connected to your persona.

Now, you may be wondering how you can develop an effective personal brand – and if by chance you think that it is difficult, you are correct. However, there are guidelines to help you accomplish this task.

First, you must be certain of the purpose and vision for your life. What impression do you want people to have of you? Where do you want to go? What are your goals?

If you can comfortably and positively answer those questions, then carry out the following tasks.

Describe your audience or in other words, the people you want to be connected with (e.g. youth, teachers, musicians). After clearly identifying your target audience you’ll better understand what you need to do to connect with it.

For example, if your intention is to be seen as a talented graphic designer, you may decide to build a website or create a social media account that displays your work.

Secondly, develop a consistent message and be intentional in your actions. Let people know what you stand for and be mindful of what you wear, what you say, the people you hang out with etc.

Finally, network! Network! Network! Connect with people who share similar interests. Find yourself in the spaces of leaders in the community you wish to be associated with and don’t be afraid of interaction.

Following these guidelines, while digesting information gained from your additional research, will set you on the path of building a powerful personal brand.

With all that said, I encourage you to spend time working on yourself so that you can control the way the world sees you.
