Forty-Nine-year old, Wilbert Benjamin Former National Cyclist and owner of Benjamin Sports and Fitness of Fyrish Village, Corentyne Berbice died Monday evening at the Georgetown Public Hospital almost one month after he was struck down on the Hampshire Public Road.
Family members confirmed that Benjamin sustained internal head injuries after he was struck by a hire car whilst riding along the public road. Benjamin would usually ride every morning as part of his training routine.
The man’s niece, Lucene Benjamin said her Benjamin was hospitalised for some time at the Anamayah Memorial Hospital and underwent a number of CT scans but was told on several instances that he was fine and there was no severe injury to his head.
“He came home from the hospital and he was doing fine but steady he complained to me about this headache. I even came over and spend some time with him because he was not looking like himself. So I kept asking him to go to the hospital but he said he was fine since he was given word from the hospital and everything was okay.”
Last week, the man’s health began deteriorating and he was taken back to the hospital where another scan was done and it was then that the family was told that Benjamin suffered a broken skull and was bleeding internally.
As such, doctors from the Anamayah Memorial Hospital then informed the family that Benjamin was in a coma and will recover in a few days, however; they referred the man to the St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital where he was expected to do a surgery but unfortunately, neurosurgeon, Amarnauth Dukhi was not in the country.
Benjamin was then transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital to be monitored with hopes of keeping him stable until Dr. Dukhi’s returns to perform the surgery. Benjamin succumbed at about 1PM Tuesday morning.
The family is calling for a full investigation as to what transpired at the private institution.
