A 36-year-old Georgetown businessman has been remanded to prison after being charged in connection with an alleged attempted armed robbery at the home of a Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) official at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo. Naipaul Basdeoram, of David Street, Kitty, appeared before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan at the Leonora Magistrates’ Court No. 2 on Friday, where the indictable charge of attempting to commit a felony—robbery under arms—was read to him.
Basdeoram was not required to enter a plea and was remanded to prison until October 9, 2026. The charge stems from an incident on August 28 at about 6:48 a.m. at the Tuschen New Housing Scheme. Police said the alleged victim, a 42-year-old Director of Projects attached to the CH&PA, was at his home when he went outside to dispose of garbage. After returning inside, he reportedly checked his security cameras and saw four masked men entering his yard. The men allegedly approached a western door and attempted to gain entry.
The homeowner reportedly contacted police immediately. Acting on information received, police intercepted three men at Fisher Dam, Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo. According to police, officers allegedly found one suspected firearm and three matching rounds of ammunition in a haversack carried by one of the men. A second suspected firearm and three matching rounds were allegedly found concealed on another suspect.
The three men initially charged in connection with the incident were identified as Yohance Carroll, 22, of Tucville; Earl Grant, 23, of Tucville; and Adrian Greenidge, 23, a security guard of Cane View Squatting Area.
Carroll, Grant and Greenidge were charged with attempting to commit a felony, namely robbery under arms. Grant and Greenidge also face separate firearm and ammunition charges. They were remanded when they appeared before the court earlier this month.
Basdeoram was subsequently arrested on August 29, one day after the alleged attempted robbery, and later charged in connection with the case. Police have not publicly detailed his alleged role in the incident. The investigation also involved examination of CCTV footage from the area, with police saying footage was extracted for processing by crime-scene technicians.
Basdeoram has previously faced other serious charges, including allegations involving firearms and ammunition, receiving stolen property, illegal departure from Guyana and manslaughter outside Guyana, according to police reporting. The latest charge remains an allegation. Basdeoram is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
