Prime Minister, Mark Phillips during his visit to the Civil Defence Commission on Sunday

Prime Minister Mark Phillips on Sunday visited the Civil Defence Commission’s (CDC’s) headquarters and its storage facility located at the National Gymnasium during which he disclosed that he agency will be focusing its attention on sending in COVOD-19 relief supplies into Region One.

A new building is currently being constructed at CDC’s Headquarters situated at Thomas Lands, to better facilitate operations and administrative offices that will aid the work of the CDC.  The Commission’s storage facility houses COVID-19 relief supplies that will provide support to families and communities that have been severely affected by the pandemic, as well as any other form of disasters.

Prime Minister Phillips, relayed that one of his responsibilities is to supervise the work of the CDC. “I am satisfied with the efforts of the CDC. The whole effort is to complement the families that have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Prime Minister Phillips said.

The CDC has been at the frontline in the fight against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).  Last week, CDC’s Director-General, Lt. Col., Kester Craig, and his team, along with Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Hon. Pauline Sukhai, and Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Hon. Nigel Dharamlall, visited Regions 8 and 9, to distribute food hampers and other COVID-19 relief supplies to those impacted by the pandemic.

Phillips noted that Region One is the focus area for the upcoming week. He also mentioned that shortly, Region 7 can expect to benefit from the COVID-19 relief supplies as some issues in the district were brought to his attention. The Prime Minister further conveyed that a budget for additional COVID-19 relief supplies is currently in progress. Once approved, the Budget will be made public.  “As we plan the Budget for CDC, we intend to cater for COVID-19 relief, and any other disasters or complex emergencies, in Guyana, for the rest of 2020,” Prime Minister Phillips said.
