The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security (MHSSS), through the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Policy Unit, in collaboration with dedicated volunteers from the Community Advocates Network (CAN), marked the International Day of Older Persons by launching an impactful awareness initiative across post offices nationwide.

Staff and volunteers undertook an awareness session to honour and support our beloved seniors. They visited post offices in Regions 2 to 10, distributing snacks and sharing moments of joy with our esteemed senior citizens. This initiative also presented a crucial opportunity to raise awareness about the prevalent issue of elderly abuse.

Elderly abuse is an alarming concern within our communities, encompassing physical, verbal, emotional, socio-economic abuse, neglect, and isolation. The ministry is committed to addressing this issue head-on. During the sessions, seniors were educated on how to identify and report elder abuse, empowering them to protect themselves and seek help when needed.

This initiative follows the “Day of Older Persons” celebrations, where the SODVPU partnered with the Elderly Commission to educate over 250 seniors at the Promenade Gardens about elder abuse and reporting mechanisms. The Ministry remains steadfast in its mission to raise awareness of elder abuse and reiterates its strong stance against all forms of Gender-Based Violence, including elder abuse.

To further support our seniors and combat elder abuse, the MHSSS maintains a 24-hour toll-free hotline number, 914. We urge everyone to reach out if they or someone they know is a victim of elder abuse. Remember, there is no excuse for abuse, and we are here to help.
