A 37-year-old Cuban national was fatally stabbed at a two-storey building in Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara, on Tuesday night, with another Cuban national taken into police custody as investigations continue.
The deceased has been identified as Lazaro Yasmany Izquierdo Duarte, a labourer who resided at the location where the incident occurred.
According to the Guyana Police Force, the incident happened at approximately 9:45 p.m. on October 20. Duarte and a 38-year-old Cuban national were reportedly occupying the same room on the lower flat of the building.
Police said another occupant of the building heard a loud noise and went to investigate. The occupant reportedly found Duarte lying in a pool of blood in the hallway with several suspected stab wounds about his body.
The 38-year-old man was allegedly seen standing nearby with a knife in his hand.
Other residents were alerted, and the matter was subsequently reported to the police.
Ranks who responded to the scene found Duarte unconscious and transported him to the Diamond Regional Hospital for medical attention. However, he was pronounced dead by a doctor at approximately 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21.
His body was subsequently taken to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it was awaiting a post-mortem examination to determine the precise cause of death.
The 38-year-old suspect was taken to the Golden Grove Police Station, where he was handed over to police and placed in custody. He remained in custody as investigators continued their enquiries into the circumstances surrounding Duarte’s death.
Police have not publicly disclosed a possible motive for the alleged stabbing or indicated whether the two men had been involved in an earlier dispute.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the post-mortem examination is expected to assist investigators in establishing the cause of death.
