An 18-year-old police constable was robbed at gunpoint of two gold chains valued at approximately $600,000 while socialising with friends at Britton Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, on Tuesday night.
According to the Guyana Police Force, the robbery occurred at about 10:15 p.m. on October 20, when an unidentified masked man armed with a handgun approached the constable and allegedly snatched the two chains from around his neck.
The jewellery weighed a combined 68 pennyweights.
Following the robbery, the suspect reportedly fled east along Britton Street. Several loud explosions, suspected to have been gunshots, were then heard, causing the constable and his friends to disperse.
The gunman subsequently entered a waiting silver motor car, which drove north along the roadway and enabled his escape.
Police have retrieved closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the surrounding area, which is being reviewed as investigators work to identify and locate the suspect.
No arrests had been reported as of October 21, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The incident highlights the continuing security concerns associated with armed robberies, particularly those involving firearms and the theft of valuable jewellery. In this case, the victim was himself a serving member of the Guyana Police Force.
Police have not indicated whether the suspected gunshots were confirmed to have been fired or whether anyone was injured during the incident.
