Keigell Carroll

He was seen doing the ‘happy dance’ before proceeding to the stage to receive his honours. But who won’t? Especially after years of sacrifice, burning the night lamp,  commuting from Linden to Georgetown and facing other challenges to pursue a profession in medicine that will open before him doors and limitless possibilities. Carroll graduated last month from Georgetown American University.  The Georgetown American University is a private healthcare-oriented university in Guyana which was established in 2013. The university trains students for the healthcare field, including nurses and doctors. Village Voice caught up with Dr.Carroll and here is his story:

Village Voice – Why did you choose medicine?
Dr. Carroll-For as long as I can even remember, being a doctor or even being in a capacity to help people has always been my goal. I’m not sure whether it was due to the fact that I had health issues of my own or if it’s just something I naturally gravitated to.

Village Voice- How was the programme?
Dr. Carroll – This program, I must say, truly encompassed all the necessities of being a well-rounded healthcare professional. Our lecturers were awesome in instilling all the medical principles and theories that we needed to make us competent during our respective practical stints.

Village Voice- What were your challenges as a student?
Dr. Carroll- As a student, my challenges included, but weren’t limited to, a lack of some physical resources and facilities to help along the educational process but I was never deterred by that. It just taught me how to be innovative and use what I have at my fingertips for different purposes than they were intended.

Village Voice- What’s next for Dr. Carroll?
Dr. Carroll:- I hope to be placed into an internship program, whether in Guyana or abroad. However, I must first be successful at the Caribbean licensing exam, CAMC, to move forward and I plan to do that in the next sitting. Then, I’ll take it from there and venture into doing community service and ultimately, open the premiere health institution in Linden and advocate for the provision of the best healthcare services in the country.

Village Voice wishes Dr. Carroll all the best.
