As more data comes in, the COVID-19 death tally shows that a whopping 98 persons died in May while the first four days of June recorded 7 deaths. Altogether, for 2021, there have been 241 COVID-19-related deaths in a little over a five-month period.
For the year thus far, the figures are as follows: January – 13; February – 20; March – 36; April – 66; May – 98; and June – 7.
In total, 405 persons have died from COVID-19 while there have been over 17,600 cases. Males continue to surpass females in their death rate with 55 males dying in May while 43 females died. For the beginning of June, however, while three males died, four females died.
The oldest person to die from COVID-19 in the first week of June was 88 years old while the oldest person to die in May was 90 years old.
Data shows that from January to February, there was a 53.9 percent increase in deaths; from February to March there was an 80 percent increase in deaths; from March to April there was an 83.3 percent increase in deaths, and from April to May there was a 48.48 percent increase in deaths.
As of June 3, Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony said a total of 207,889 or 42.7 percent of the adult population have received the first dose of the vaccine while persons being fully immunized by receiving the second dose amount to 73,471 or 15 percent of the adult population.
In his recent update, he said that the period between which persons can return for their second dose of the AstraZeneca and Sinopharm vaccines has been shifted to anywhere between 4 to 12 weeks. He said that the Ministry has noticed that in some Regions, there are a number of persons who have not returned for their second dose.
As such, he stated: “We appeal to persons who have received their sinopharm vaccine to please come back and take your second dose because without being fully immunized you’re not going to get all of the benefits of the vaccine,” he said.
The Minister added that there have been no adverse effects to the vaccines in Guyana.
