Mashramani 2027 will feature new attractions alongside its established music competitions and street celebrations, as Culture, Youth and Sport Minister Charles Ramson Jr calls for greater private-sector support for Guyana’s annual Republic Day festivities.
The calendar was launched on Wednesday, October 21, under the theme “Guyanese Uniting, Guyana Rising,” with Mash Night, the Masquerade Jamboree and Mashramani Pop-Up Concerts among the new attractions announced.
Returning events include the Soca, Chutney, Calypso and Dancehall Monarch competitions, Banks on the Avenue and the main Mashramani celebrations. The official launch of the 2027 festivities is scheduled for January 15, ahead of Republic Day on February 23.
Addressing Wednesday’s launch, Ramson said Mashramani had developed over the past three years as a national platform for local creatives to showcase their talents. He urged businesses to play a greater role in supporting the celebrations, warning that the government could take a firmer approach to future engagements if sufficient support was not forthcoming.
Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Steven Jacobs also outlined changes intended to improve the experience for participants and spectators.
“Mashramani is here to stay. We want to make sure it’s good, clean fun,” Jacobs said.

From Linden to a national celebration
Mashramani originated in Linden in 1970, when Guyana marked its transition to republican status on February 23, less than four years after gaining independence from Britain.
The first celebration was organised by the Jaycees of Linden. The event subsequently developed into a national celebration, with Georgetown becoming the main venue for the costume-band competition.
The name Mashramani is commonly interpreted as “celebration after hard work” and reflects the communal spirit associated with the festivities.
Today, Mashramani is a major feature of Guyana’s annual Republic Day observances, bringing together music, dance, costume bands, masquerade and competitions that showcase the country’s cultural traditions.
2026 winners look ahead
The launch also featured appearances by the winners of the 2026 Soca, Dancehall, Chutney and Calypso competitions, who thanked the government for providing opportunities to compete and showcase their talents on a national stage.
The artistes expressed enthusiasm for the 2027 competitions and celebrations.
With the programme now announced, preparations will continue towards the January 15 official launch and the main festivities on February 23, when Guyana marks the 57th anniversary of its attainment of republican status.
