At just 19 years old, Lavalla Sears is already exploring her creativity in ways that extend beyond the classroom. A Home Economics teacher with aspirations of becoming a psychologist, Lavalla is also a passionate crocheter, cook, poet, and artist who enjoys transforming her crafty ideas into beautiful handmade creations.
Her journey into crocheting began with a simple source of inspiration: Pinterest.
“I saw the cute designs on Pinterest and was determined enough to teach myself the skill from YouTube,” she shared.
What started as a hobby has gradually evolved into something more. After approximately eight months of crocheting, Lavalla is now working towards turning her passion into a successful business.
“I’m trying to grow it into a successful business now,” Sears explained.
With her busy schedule, Lavalla does not follow a fixed number of hours for crocheting. Instead, she creates crochet pieces, whenever she has free time. However, now that she has more availability following her CPCE examinations, crocheting has become a regular part of her daily routine.
Among the pieces she enjoys making most are small flowers and scrunchies, but one creation stands out above the rest: her ruffle hat.

“My ruffle hat is my favourite piece because it was my first big crochet project,” she said. Although the hat is not perfect and took four days to complete, it remains special to her because of the dedication and effort invested in creating it.
For Lavalla, the greatest reward is not simply completing a project. It is seeing her hard work come to life and knowing that others appreciate what she has created.
“I love the final products, seeing my hard work being paid off and appreciated,” she said.
Looking back, Lavalla wishes she had discovered crocheting sooner. “Yes, I wish I started earlier actually,” she admitted.
Her experience has also taught her an important lesson that she hopes to share with other young people interested in learning the craft: patience is essential.
“My advice to anyone younger who wants to learn crocheting is to be patient and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Start with simple projects, practice consistently, and don’t compare your progress to others. With time and dedication, you’ll improve and create pieces you can be proud of.”
Lavalla’s story is a reminder that creativity can begin with something as simple as seeing an idea/skill and deciding to learn. With determination, practice, and a willingness to make mistakes, a small hobby can become a meaningful skill, and potentially, a thriving business.
