We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) Member of Parliament Dr. Gordon Barker has called on Guyanese to join demands for the release of Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed, arguing that the concerns driving the protest extend beyond politics to the livelihoods and safety of citizens.
Barker made the remarks last night while addressing supporters at a candlelight vigil titled “Mourning the Death of Democracy,” held in front of the Convention Centre, where Parliament is presently being held.
He appealed for wider public participation and pledged that those gathered would continue pressing for justice.
“This has gone past politics. We’re talking about the livelihood. We’re talking about the safety of our people,” he said.
Barker urged “all right-thinking” Guyanese to join the effort, presenting the issues as matters that should attract support beyond party lines.
He also made clear that the gathering would not mark the end of their public advocacy, vowing to maintain pressure for Mohamed’s release.
“We will continue to be out here. We will continue to call for the release of the Leader of the Opposition. We will continue to call for justice for our people,” Barker said.
