UG Press Publishes New Issue of the Transformation Journal Titled: “Oil Production and Structural Change in Guyana”

The University of Guyana Press is pleased to announce that the latest issue of the Transformation Journal has been published. The Transformation Journal, previously known as the Transition Journal, has a long history of extending scholarship through the publishing of scholarly work on a range of topical issues affecting Guyana and the wider Caribbean region. This special issue, which was carefully curated by Dr. Leyland Lucas, Chair of the Transformation Journal Committee and Dean of the School of Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation (SEBI) at the University of Guyana, continues to execute this mandate by focusing on the theme “Oil Production and Structural Change in Guyana.”

In examining this theme, the authors—Elton Bollers, Dr. Dianna DaSilva-Glasgow, Dr. Leyland Lucas, Evelina Singh, and Dr. Patrick Williams— “employ economic, organizational, legal, and spatial development theories to examine the potential consequences of the presence and expansion of the oil and gas sector on Guyana’s development.”

DaSilva-Glasgow and Bollers, in the article “Is Oil and Gas Induced Economic Growth Impacting Export Diversification? A Look at Guyana’s Exports to CARICOM,” build on previous academic scholarship by assessing Guyana’s emerging oil and gas sector through the lens of regional trade. In the article “Legitimacy and Trust: Essential Aspects in New Venture Creation,” Lucas, in assessing the growing business landscape of Guyana, argues that “new firms face legitimacy challenges … which impairs their ability to access critical resources.” Singh, in the article “Mediation and Conflicts in Guyana’s Oil and Gas Sector,” examines the country’s growing oil wealth and its potential to create conflict around issues of ownership, distribution of benefits, and economic transformation. 

Finally, Williams, in the article “The Potential of the Oil and Gas Sector to Transform Guyana’s Spatial Development,” utilizes the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to assess the development of Guyana’s coastal and hinterland regions and to propose a strategy to facilitate the transfer of resources from the oil and gas sector to those regions lagging in development.

The authors in their respective articles do not simply delineate their respective areas of focus; more importantly, they offer timely solutions that can benefit society.

Other Publications

This latest issue of the Transformation Journal joins the newly published book A Ray of Hope: Reflections on the Development of Science and Technology in Guyana and the Caribbean by Dr. Ulric Trotz. In this book, Dr. Trotz draws on over six decades of professional experience, offering unique insights into regional efforts to address the use of science and technology. This professional biography offers an insider’s perspective on the processes and environments that enabled Dr. Trotz to be intimately involved in the institutional development of the Chemistry Department at the University of Guyana, the Institute of Applied Science and Technology in Guyana, and, finally, the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre in Belize. In describing these institutional developments, he provides readers with insights into the historical and current state of national and regional science and technology infrastructure, and details of the accomplishments of the Institute of Applied Science and Technology and the regional Climate Change Centre, many of which have not been widely disseminated.
