For many, balancing motherhood, work, and academics may seem like an impossible task, but for Nivean Fordyce, a passionate teacher with over six years of classroom experience, it became a journey of resilience, purpose, and growth.

A graduate of the University of Guyana, Fordyece holds a Bachelor of Social Science (International Relations). She recently graduated with an Associate of Science (Mathematics). Her achievements represent more than academic success; they tell a story of determination, discipline, and a deep love for learning.

“Balancing motherhood and academics weren’t easy. I pursued my studies while pregnant and caring for a toddler. But that experience only strengthened my resilience and deepened my passion for lifelong learning,” she admits.

Teaching, for her, has always been more than a job, but rather a calling. “I’ve always believed in the power of education to change lives. Growing up, I admired teachers who saw potential in every student, even when we didn’t see it ourselves. Their patience and dedication inspired me to do the same, to make a lasting difference in the lives of others,” she shared.

Her teaching philosophy centers around empowerment. “Education is the tool that builds confidence and opens doors. I teach because I want every child to believe they are capable of achieving more than they imagine.”

Throughout her school years, she was fortunate to have mentors who shaped not just her academic path, but her character and values.

She recalls Miss Juanita John, her History and Dance teacher, with fondness. “She taught me the importance of balance, how to embrace both intellect and creativity. She inspired confidence and passion in everything she did.”

Another key influence was Miss Shebecia Sobers, her Dance teacher. “Her energy, discipline, and expressiveness reminded me that hard work and creativity can coexist beautifully,” she said.

And though Miss Padmini, a Mathematics teacher, never formally taught her, she became an inspiration, nonetheless. “Her drive and professionalism made a lasting impression. She represented the kind of teacher I aspire to be—dedicated, inspiring, and impactful.”

The realisation that teaching was her true calling came naturally. “I noticed how easily I connected with students, especially through my love for Mathematics,” she explained. “My natural strictness helped keep them focused, but what truly brought me joy was seeing that spark in their eyes when they finally understood a concept.”

That joy, she says, confirmed her purpose. “It’s not just about teaching equations, it’s about helping students believe in their ability to succeed.”

For her, the most rewarding part of teaching is seeing the transformation in her students. “Watching them grow both academically and personally, is the greatest fulfillment,” she said. “Their confidence, independence, and motivation remind me every day that education truly changes lives.”

But behind the success lies sacrifice. “One of my biggest challenges has been balancing my personal life with my professional responsibilities,” she shared. “There were moments of exhaustion and doubt, but I pushed through with prayer, good time management, and a constant reminder of my purpose—to inspire and educate others, no matter the obstacles.”

When asked what advice she would share with those considering a career in education, her response was heartfelt and thoughtful.

“Enter teaching with an open heart and a clear sense of purpose,” she urged. “It requires patience, adaptability, and dedication—but it’s one of the most meaningful paths you can take. Stay curious, keep learning, and remember that your influence reaches far beyond the classroom.”

As a wife, mother, and educator, Nivean embodies what it means to persevere through life’s challenges with grace and determination. Her journey is not just one of personal achievement but of purpose, proving that with passion, faith, and persistence, anything is possible.

Her story serves as a reminder that teachers don’t just impart knowledge, they shape futures, one student at a time.
