GEORGETOWN, Guyana — The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) have expressed sadness at the passing of former PNCR Leader and Opposition Leader Robert Herman Orlando Corbin, CCH, describing his death as an “irreplaceable loss” to the party.
In a statement, the PNCR reflected on Corbin’s decades of service to both the party and Guyana, noting that he held several senior political and government positions during his career.
Corbin, popularly known as “RHO”, served as National Chairman of the Young Socialist Movement, General Secretary and Leader of the PNCR, as well as Leader of the Opposition. He also served in government as a Parliamentary Secretary, Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.
The party remembered him as an “astute, loyal, disciplined and hardworking” member who remained committed to the PNCR throughout his life.
Particular attention was paid to Corbin’s advocacy for coalition politics. The PNCR described him as a “shrewd politician” and an avid promoter of political coalitions, crediting him with helping to move the party towards the coalition approach that eventually contributed to the formation of APNU and later the APNU+AFC alliance, which won the 2015 general and regional elections.
Alongside his political career, Corbin pursued the legal profession and became an attorney-at-law. According to the PNCR, even while battling illness, he remained engaged with the party and continued to provide advice.
“Comrade Corbin’s death is an irreplaceable loss to the PNCR and he will surely be missed,” the party said.
The PNCR and APNU extended condolences to Corbin’s wife, Carol, his children, other relatives, colleagues and friends, while expressing the hope that they would find comfort during their period of bereavement.
“May his soul rest in peace as we continue to benefit from his lasting contributions to our Party and Guyana,” the statement concluded.
