On this Emancipation Day, the Alliance For Change (AFC) joins all Guyanese in honouring the courage, resilience, sacrifice and enduring legacy of our African ancestors, whose struggle against the brutal institution of slavery helped shape the foundation of our nation.
Emancipation is more than a historical milestone. It is a continuing call to uphold the principles of freedom, justice, equality and human dignity. The sacrifices made by those who came before us impose upon every generation the responsibility to build a society where opportunity is available to all, where every citizen is treated with respect, and where no community is left behind.
As we celebrate the rich cultural heritage, traditions and achievements of Afro-Guyanese, we also acknowledge the invaluable contributions they have made—and continue to make— alongside our brothers and sisters of other ethnicities, to Guyana’s development in public service, business, education, security, culture, sports, agriculture, security and every sphere of national life.
The AFC believes that the true spirit of Emancipation can only be realised when our country embraces unity over division, fairness over favouritism, and inclusion over exclusion. Our diversity remains Guyana’s greatest strength, and it must never be used to divide us, but rather to inspire us to work together for a more prosperous and just nation.
Today, as Guyana stands at a defining moment in its history, and as we continue to mourn the lives of those who perished senselessly on the MV Barima, we recognise that as a people, we are blessed with immense opportunities but challenged by deep social and political divisions. We renew our commitment to building a country where every citizen—regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender or political affiliation—has an equal stake in our nation’s future.
Let this Emancipation Day be a reminder that freedom carries responsibility: the responsibility to defend democracy, protect the rule of law, promote good governance, and ensure that the benefits of our nation’s wealth are shared equitably among all Guyanese.
The Alliance For Change extends warm Emancipation Day greetings to all Guyanese at home and in the diaspora. May this occasion renew our resolve to continue the unfinished work of creating a united, inclusive and truly free Guyana.
Happy Emancipation Day.
