Guyana’s chess representatives, FIDE Master Anthony Drayton and Candidate Master Taffin Khan, have continued to showcase their talent and resilience against some of the Caribbean and Latin America’s strongest players at the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo.
The duo led Guyana to a 13th-place finish in the Men’s Rapid Chess Team Competition, each scoring four points while producing outstanding individual performances against higher-rated opposition.
Drayton opened the tournament with a memorable victory over Mexico’s Grandmaster Sion Galaviz Medina (2437), while Khan concluded the competition in style with an impressive win over Colombia’s FIDE Master Andres Santiago Garzon Camelo (2424).
Team Guyana recorded 2-0 victories over Haiti and Puerto Rico, while earning hard-fought draws against Mexico, Nicaragua, Jamaica, and eventual champions Colombia, finishing with eight board points and eight match points.
Competing on one of the region’s biggest sporting stages, Anthony and Taffin demonstrated that Guyanese chess continues to grow in strength, determination, and international competitiveness.
