What began as a lifelong mystery is now becoming a documentary that spans continents, cultures, and generations. Filmmaker and social impact advocate Rianna Patterson is raising funds to produce her documentary, Chale, I’m Finding the Pattersons, a deeply personal film chronicling her remarkable journey to find her long-lost Ghanaian father and extended family.
Raised in Dominica, Patterson spent much of her life without ever seeing a photograph of her father. For years, she was told that he had died in a plane crash, leaving her with unanswered questions and a lingering sense of uncertainty. Despite the conflicting stories, she remained determined to uncover the truth.
That determination eventually led to an extraordinary breakthrough in 2025. Armed with little more than her father’s name, nationality, and faith, Patterson embarked on a search that would ultimately reunite her with her father and siblings. The turning point came after she and a cousin followed a strong intuition and repeatedly visited a house in London they believed belonged to her father.
Although he was not there during their visits, a message from an uncle during a church service later set in motion a chain of events that led to the reunion. At the age of 28, Patterson met her father for the very first time.
The reunion transformed her life. What started as a search for one person quickly expanded into the discovery of an entire family network. Patterson went from being an only child to gaining brothers, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins spread across the United Kingdom, the United States, Ghana, and beyond.
Now, she hopes to bring that story to audiences through film. Chale, I’m Finding the Pattersons will follow her continuing journey as she explores her Ghanaian roots while documenting themes of identity, belonging, culture, faith, and family restoration. The documentary will be filmed in Ghana, where Patterson plans to reconnect with her heritage, as well as in Dominica, where her search first began.
The project will blend Caribbean and Ghanaian cultural influences, archival materials, and documentary-style storytelling. Beyond the personal narrative, Patterson intends to highlight community initiatives and social impact projects, including partnerships with organizations such as Alzheimer’s Ghana.
Interest in the story has already been significant. Patterson says her journey has attracted more than 60,000 views across social media platforms and has been featured by several publications. The attention also led to an invitation to facilitate a TEDx workshop in London.
For Patterson, however, the documentary is about more than a family reunion. It is a story about perseverance, faith, and the universal desire to know where one belongs. As her search continues, including efforts to locate a long-lost half-brother in Jamaica, she hopes the film will inspire others who are navigating their own journeys of identity and connection.
“Chale, I’m Finding the Pattersons” seeks to preserve a story that crosses borders and generations, while reminding audiences that family ties can endure despite years of separation and uncertainty.
