Trinidad and Tobago has officially become the 125th member of the Global Biodiversity Alliance (GBA), a Guyana-led initiative aimed at strengthening international cooperation to protect and restore the world’s biodiversity.
President Irfaan Ali presented the certificate of membership to Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Friday during the Forty-Ninth Regular Meeting of the CARICOM Conference of Heads of Government in Saint Lucia.
The Alliance was proposed by Guyana at the United Nations General Assembly and formally launched in 2025 as a global platform bringing together governments, Indigenous Peoples, scientists, civil society and the private sector to promote biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, sustainable financing and nature-based solutions. It also supports implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, the global agreement to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. President Ali welcomed Trinidad and Tobago’s accession, describing it as another step in expanding international collaboration to conserve biodiversity. He said the Alliance reflects Guyana’s commitment to creating a global partnership to unite governments, experts and communities in protecting the world’s natural resources.
Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar welcomed her country’s admission, saying Trinidad and Tobago was pleased to join the initiative and looked forward to working with other member states to address shared environmental challenges through cooperation and the exchange of knowledge.
