The New York celebration of Guyana’s Diamond Jubilee Independence has ignited a renewed sense of pride, unity and ambition among Guyanese living abroad, with organizers describing this year’s historic events as the beginning of a movement to elevate the diaspora’s presence across the United States.

Chairman of the Guyana Independence Celebration Committee New York, Rickford Burke, said the unprecedented success of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations has inspired thousands of Guyanese Americans to embrace their heritage while looking confidently toward the future.

“This Diamond Jubilee Independence celebration has pumped unimagined energy into the Guyanese American community. It has engendered unprecedented national pride in every Guyanese as we reflect on the evolution of our heritage, history, culture and nationhood.

Our celebration is choreographed to highlight to the nation and diaspora, Guyana’s journey from slavery to social transformation and the path to modern development. The celebration theme: ‘Feel The Riddim Of The Nation @ 60’ – captures the mood of the diaspora as we approach this historic milestone.”

Burke said the June 7 Guyana Independence Parade and Unity Concert in Brooklyn exceeded all expectations, drawing more than 20,000 participants in what has been hailed as one of the largest gatherings of Guyanese ever staged in New York.

“I felt so proud to be a Guyanese in American as I watch the massive turnout of over 20,000 Guyanese on the streets of Brooklyn during the Independence parade and Unity concert. It was a mini Labor Day parade.”

For Burke, the overwhelming turnout demonstrated not only the strength of the Guyanese community but also its growing influence in American society.

Looking ahead, he unveiled an ambitious vision to transform the annual celebration into one of the premier Caribbean cultural events in the United States. Organizers are aiming to attract more than 50,000 participants next year and grow attendance to 100,000 by 2030.

“We Guyanese are making our mark in America. Next year we plan to mobilise over fifty thousand Guyanese for this event. My vision is to grow this celebration to one hundred thousand attendees by 2030.”

Burke said the committee’s aspirations extend well beyond hosting a successful parade. He believes the celebration should inspire Guyanese to excel in every sphere of American life while preserving the values and traditions that define their identity.

“Every Guyanese at home and in the diaspora should be proud. I want our presence to be felt here in New York and all across the US. Guyanese dominance in New York is coming. Watch out for us! We not only want to dominate the streets with a parade. We want to dominate in business entrepreneurship, education, culture, as well in the fight for social justice, equality and equity and for the rights of immigrants.”

The Diamond Jubilee festivities will culminate on Saturday, July 4, with the Guyana Diamond Jubilee Independence Gala and Awards Ceremony at the Weldon B. Smith Theater in St. Albans, Queens. The gala, which was postponed from June 27 to allow greater participation by stakeholders and honourees, will celebrate the achievements of distinguished Guyanese whose contributions have left a lasting impact in diplomacy, public service, education, business, culture and community development.

Among those to receive U.S. Congressional Awards are Baroness Valerie Amos, former Leader of the British House of Lords and current Master of University College, Oxford; Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards, former Chancellor of the Judiciary of Guyana and Chief Justice-designate of the Turks and Caicos Islands; former Ambassador Dr. Shamir Ally; cultural leader Dr. Rose October; former Mount Vernon Comptroller Maureen Walker; parliamentarian and educator Dr. Riaz Rupnarain; Guyana’s top 2025 CSEC student Jayden Adrian; community activist Ira Pile Lewis (Lady Ira); entrepreneur Indra Jainarinesingh of Tota’s Bakery; youth mentor Omotolo Golding; businessman Onoja Atta Onoja; Member of Parliament Dr. Terrence Campbell; attorney and community leader Rhonda Binda; educator Remmy Kulsum; and former Irvington Town Council member Dr. Sandra Harte.

The event is expected to attract prominent elected officials, diplomats and community leaders, including Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, Mayor Zohran Mamdani and other invited dignitaries. Entertainment will feature Foundation Band alongside several leading Guyanese artistes and DJs.

For organisers, the Diamond Jubilee celebrations represent far more than a commemoration of Guyana’s 60 years of independence. They symbolise the remarkable journey of a people whose contributions continue to expand beyond their homeland while inspiring future generations to embrace their heritage with confidence, unity and purpose. Burke said the vision is not simply to celebrate Guyana’s past, but to build an even stronger, more influential Guyanese community whose impact is felt in business, education, public service, culture and civic life throughout the United States.
