The Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) has strongly condemned the disclosure of personal information relating to Dr. Gordon Barker, parliamentarian for We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), during the 2026 Budget debates. In a social media post, the union emphasized that no educator, regardless of political affiliation, should be subjected to public humiliation, political attacks, or misuse of private information.

The GTU’s statement came after Education Minister Sonia Parag, in her Budget 2026 presentation, referenced Dr. Barker’s attendance record, reportedly accusing him of being tardy and stating that he should “lead by example.”

In condemning the disclosure, the GTU called for accountability and a formal apology, reaffirming its commitment to defending the dignity, rights, and professional integrity of teachers in Guyana.

“Teachers must never be used as tools in political discourse. Our profession deserves respect at all times,” the union said in its social media post. A formal statement further highlighted the union’s concern:

“It is unacceptable that sensitive information was disclosed in such a manner. No teacher, regardless of political persuasion or affiliation, should ever be subjected to vile, disrespectful, and politically motivated attacks. Such actions undermine the dignity of the teaching profession and erode the principles of fairness and respect that must guide our national discourse.

“The GTU strongly condemns this behaviour and calls upon the Honourable Minister of Education to issue a formal apology to Mr. Barker. We emphasise that these practices must never be condoned, as they set a dangerous precedent and compromise the integrity of parliamentary proceedings.

“Teachers are the backbone of our nation’s development and their professional and personal lives must be safeguarded from political exploitation. The GTU remains steadfast in defending the rights, dignity, and respect of educators.”

In response, Minister Parag denied any wrongdoing and rejected the GTU’s allegations.

“I have taken note of the press statement issued by the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) concerning remarks made during my presentation on Budget 2026 in the National Assembly. I wish to clarify that no breach of confidential or sensitive information occurred at any point during my contribution to the Parliamentary Budget Debate,” she said.

Parag further noted that as a sitting Member of Parliament, Dr. Barker’s conduct and professional record are subject to public scrutiny within the National Assembly.

“Parliamentary debate, by its nature, involves accountability and transparency, particularly where public service delivery is concerned. I categorically reject any suggestion that any remarks were politically motivated or intended to undermine the dignity of the teaching profession. On the contrary, my comments were made in the context of advocating for accountability, improved standards, and the best possible outcomes for our children,” she added.

The episode underscores the delicate balance between holding public officials accountable and safeguarding the respect owed to professionals, leaving the Assembly—and the public—grappling with how best to uphold both standards and dignity in the service of the nation.”
