President Irfaan Ali’s state visit to Qatar has produced fresh interest in Guyana from major Gulf businesses, with retail giant LuLu Group preparing to send a technical team to Georgetown and Qatar Airways considering Guyana for passenger and cargo connectivity.

The developments came during Ali’s three-day State Visit to Qatar, where the President has been pursuing investment, trade and stronger international links as Guyana seeks to leverage its expanding oil-driven economy.

Ali met LuLu Group International Chairman and Managing Director M. A. Yusuff Ali, who indicated that the company intends to explore investment opportunities in Guyana.

“Mr Ali expressed his commitment to investing in Guyana and indicated that a technical team will visit our country within the next 30 days to explore potential opportunities,”

President Ali said.

LuLu is one of the Gulf region’s major retail operators, with a substantial international sourcing and distribution network. A visit by its technical team could therefore open discussions not only on retail investment but potentially on Guyana’s agricultural, manufacturing and consumer-goods supply chains.

Qatar Airways talks could open new international corridor

Ali also held discussions with Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer Hamad Ali Al-Khater on the possibility of Guyana being incorporated into the airline’s international network.

The talks covered both passenger and cargo services, potentially giving Guyana another connection to the Middle East and markets accessible through Qatar Airways’ extensive global network.

Any eventual service would represent a significant development in Guyana’s international connectivity, particularly as the country seeks to expand tourism, investment and trade links beyond its traditional Caribbean and North American markets.

The discussions also come as Guyana continues to develop its position as a commercial bridge between the Caribbean and South America. Guyana established diplomatic relations with Brazil in 1968, two years after independence, and the relationship has progressively expanded into trade, infrastructure, security and other areas. Brazil officially notes that the two countries share approximately 1,600 kilometres of border and have increasingly deepened their economic and technical cooperation.

That geographic relationship has become increasingly important as Guyana pursues closer links with South America while maintaining its longstanding Caribbean identity.

Qatar partnership expands beyond investment

Ali’s Qatar engagements also included talks with Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani.

Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the two sides discussed bilateral cooperation and ways to strengthen and develop relations across various areas, while also exchanging views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.

The visit has therefore extended beyond individual investment proposals, with Guyana and Qatar exploring broader avenues for economic and diplomatic cooperation.

Ali and First Lady Arya Ali also toured Education City in Al Rayyan, including the 40,000-seat Education City Stadium, and the Qatar Foundation campus. They met Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Vice Chairperson of Qatar Foundation.

The visit provided an opportunity for Guyanese officials to examine Qatar’s investments in education, research, innovation and human development—areas that could offer opportunities for future cooperation as Guyana invests its growing revenues in national development.

The latest engagements follow Ali’s meeting with Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, earlier in the state visit. Those discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding investment cooperation.

The challenge now will be converting expressions of interest into concrete projects, particularly as Guyana seeks to ensure that its rapidly expanding international partnerships deliver investment, jobs, technology and stronger connections for the domestic economy.
