By Sherdon Cowan- West Indies batsman Shai Hope played a crucial role in setting the foundation for the Hobart Hurricanes’ highest total of the Big Bash League (BBL) season, as they secured a nail-biting 11-run victory over the Adelaide Strikers at the Adelaide Oval on Friday.
Hope’s breezy 37 off 22 balls provided the early impetus for the Hurricanes, who later powered to a daunting 214-5, courtesy of Tim David’s explosive 33 off 14 balls and Ben McDermott’s stunning 68 off 34 balls.
Despite Matthew Short’s 52 and late fireworks from Jamie Overton, who was unbeaten on 30 off 16 balls, the Strikers fell short of their target as they ended at 203-6 from their allotment.

After the Hurricanes, who were asked to take first strike, lost Mitch Owen for eight, Hope joined Caleb Jewell (22) in the middle, and the two added 56 runs for the second wicket to steady the innings.
The Windies ODI captain displayed his trademark elegance as he moved around the crease to manipulate the field and took advantage of the true bounce of the surface. His innings, which featured a mix of precision and power, included two fours and two sixes and set the tone for the middle-order to capitalize.
While Jewell struggled to find rhythm, Hope kept the scoreboard ticking before falling to Overton, who used a well-directed short ball to claim his wicket.
After Hope’s dismissal, the Hurricanes faced a brief lull in the middle overs, though McDermott and Nikhil Chaudhary (20) added 35 for the fourth wicket.
Tim David arrived in the 14th over and lashed four boundaries and two sixes in a 14-ball cameo, as he partnered with McDermott in a 54-run fifth-wicket stand that took the game away from the Strikers.
David was later bowled by Liam Scott, but McDermott, who demonstrated inventive strokeplay and clean hitting in the death overs, proved decisive, as he smashed five towering sixes and three boundaries to get the Hurricanes their winning total. Chris Jordan supported with an unbeaten 17.
Overton, the Strikers’ standout bowler, finished with an impressive 2 for 27 in an otherwise challenging outing for the bowling unit.
Chasing 215, the Strikers got off to a blistering start with skipper Matthew Short and D’Arcy Short smashing 76 runs within seven overs. D’Arcy’s brisk 41 off 22 balls kept the home side on track before a mistimed shot saw him depart.
Still, Short, rediscovering his form, struck the second-fastest half-century of his BBL career off just 27 balls. However, his dismissal two balls later to a sharp catch by Hurricanes captain Nathan Ellis halted the momentum.
Regular wickets thereafter derailed the chase, with Alex Ross (8) and Ollie Pope (39) tied down during a brilliant spell by Ellis in the power surge. Jordan then accounted for both batsmen, as David’s diving catch at mid-on to dismiss Ross further highlighted the Hurricanes’ all-round brilliance on the day.
Overton produced a late blitz for the Strikers, but it was not enough to get them across the line, as the Hurricanes secured their second consecutive win after a rocky start to the season.
For the Hurricanes, the win took them to fifth on the standings on four points, while the Strikers, now at a precarious 1-3 record, face a pivotal New Year’s Eve clash against the Perth Scorchers to keep their season alive, as they are seventh on two points. (Sportsmax).
