By Mark DaCosta- In a shocking incident, a 21-year-old tour guide was fatally stabbed during an Indigenous Heritage celebration early Sunday morning. The victim, John Elliot, was a member of the Atta Lodge team and a resident of Surama Village, North Rupununi. Police reports indicate that the young man’s life was cut short following a violent confrontation involving multiple suspects, including a 16-year-old school dropout and two brothers, aged 20 and 18.

Elliot’s tragic demise occurred around 1:30 a.m. at the festivities dedicated to celebrating the rich culture of the Indigenous Peoples. Eyewitness accounts from a police officer in attendance helped identify the main perpetrator, a minor who allegedly inflicted fatal wounds to Elliot’s chest. The stabbing reportedly took place during a confrontation involving the three suspects, prompting a swift police response. Authorities quickly apprehended the juvenile at the residence of the two brothers, Ronaldo and Orlando Williams, who are still at large.

As reports unfolded, it emerged that while the minor’s mother was present during questioning, he vehemently denied any involvement in the crime, claiming instead that Orlando Williams had attacked Elliot. The police officer’s testimony proved crucial, having positively identified the 16-year-old as the attacker. Meanwhile, authorities are actively pursuing the Williams brothers as part of a broader investigation to bring all those responsible to justice.

After the incident, Elliot’s body was examined at Annai District Hospital, where the medical team discovered two stab wounds —

one on the left side of his chest and the other near the right rib area. A post-mortem examination has been scheduled for September 22, 2025, to determine the exact cause of death officially. The local community and organisations such as Atta Lodge have expressed their grief and shock. A heartfelt tribute on social media described Elliot as a “remarkable person who was passionate about birding and biodiversity,” highlighting the warmth and positivity he brought to his work and those around him.

The stabbing has reignited discussions about the safety of public celebrations in the country and the rising incidences of youth violence. With the nation unified in mourning, the incident serves as a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the urgent need for increased community engagement and youth support programs.

The situation remains fluid, with police continuing their efforts to locate the two fugitives. In a statement to the press, the police force reassured the public of their commitment to solving this heinous crime and emphasised the importance of community cooperation in ensuring the safety and security of everyone attending public events.

As tributes continue to pour in for John Elliot, the palpable sense of loss is felt throughout the region. Locals have gathered to share memories of the young guide and express their condolences to his grieving family and friends.

In the wake of this heart-wrenching incident, many are calling for enhanced measures to address the root causes of youth violence and to foster a culture of peace and respect during community celebrations.
