A Voice for the People Silenced-Trevor Daly Passes

By Mark DaCosta- In a tragic turn of events, Trevor Lloyd Daly, a respected figure in the trade union movement and a dedicated public servant, passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025. His untimely departure, following a serious vehicular accident on July 10 along the Hero’s Highway, East Bank Demerara, has resonated deeply. Mr. Daly’s commitment to advocating for workers’ rights and ensuring public safety in air navigation spanned over three decades, and his loss has left a significant void in both the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) and the wider community.

Trevor Daly was born 51 years ago and grew up in our nation, where he completed his secondary education at Alleyne’s High School. In 1990, he began his professional journey by joining the Civil Aviation Authority, becoming an Air Traffic Controller who was instrumental in maintaining the safety of our country’s airspace. Over the next 34 years, Daly ascended to the role of Unit Chief of Air Navigation Services at Timehri Tower. His technical expertise was complemented by a profound dedication to public service, which he exhibited through his significant involvement in the trade union movement.

Daly’s journey in trade unionism truly took off as he took on the role of Branch Chairman at the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority. His leadership abilities and commitment to improving the conditions for all workers allowed him to advance through various key positions within the GPSU. He held titles such as Organising Secretary and Projects Officer before ultimately serving as the Second Vice President on the Executive Council. Additionally, his role as Communications Officer demonstrated his versatility and commitment, as he oversaw the Union’s social media presence and website, helping to engage and inform members.

His dedication did not go unnoticed. Colleagues and members of the GPSU remember him as a passionate advocate for workers’ rights. He was never one to shy away from a challenge; in fact, he was often known to be quite vocal in presenting his viewpoints. Trevor’s ability to argue tirelessly for the causes he believed in set a standard within the union and encouraged many others in the movement to do the same. His willingness to lend a helping hand extended beyond the realm of professional responsibilities; he fostered a sense of camaraderie among fellow trade unionists, helping to uplift those around him.

Tragically, Trevor Daly’s life was cut short due to an accident that has raised significant concerns about road safety. On July 10, 2025, while travelling along the Hero’s Highway, his vehicle unexpectedly collided with an unmarked plank lying across the road. The absence of reflectors or warning signs has stirred outrage among those who have called for improved safety measures on our roadways, especially in light of the loss of a man whose career was dedicated to ensuring safety in air traffic. Following the accident, he was rushed to the Diamond Regional Hospital before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he succumbed to serious spinal injuries just days later.

His passing has sparked waves of grief and disbelief within the GPSU and the broader community. Many have commented on the profound impact he had not only in his professional capacity but also through his personal interactions, characterised by a warm sense of humour and calmness even during turbulent times. Fellow union members have shared heartfelt tributes, underlining how much they valued his counsel and leadership.

Trevor’s death marks the end of an era for the GPSU, where he had become a cherished figure and a strong advocate for the rights of public sector workers. His contributions to the trade union movement and his steadfast dedication to advancing the welfare of workers will be remembered fondly. The Union, along with its President, Executive Council, and members, continues to navigate the emotional aftermath of his sudden loss, promising to carry on the work that he was so passionately dedicated to.

The goodbye was not easy; funeral services took place on July 21, 2025, where many gathered to pay their respects and honour his life. Trevor Daly’s legacy will certainly endure, etched in the history of our nation as a testament to his unwavering commitment to service, safety, and solidarity among workers. As the GPSU moves forward, it is evident that Trevor Daly’s spirit will continue to motivate and inspire future generations of trade unionists.
