By Mark DaCosta-In a devastating incident, a 26-year-old mechanic lost his life following a violent confrontation with a taxi driver in Georgetown. The tragic event, which took place on the afternoon of July 4, 2025, has been described as a road rage incident, a term used to describe aggressive and violent behaviours exhibited by drivers during traffic-related disputes. Road rage can escalate quickly, leading to severe consequences, as demonstrated in this case.
Jamal Green, a mechanic residing at the D’Urban Street Lodge, was fatally stabbed after an altercation with 30-year-old Keon Belgrave, a taxi driver from the Sophia squatting area. The incident occurred between Robb and Albert Streets around 1:30 PM when both men found themselves in a heated confrontation. Authorities are now treating this case as a suspected road rage incident, and investigations are ongoing.
According to reports from law enforcement, the conflict began when Belgrave was driving his car, PXX 7379, south on Albert Street, followed closely by Green on his motorcycle, CN 9595. An altercation erupted after Green rode alongside Belgrave’s vehicle and provocatively remarked that he “should have hit him” with his car. This comment set off an angry exchange between the two men, leading to both continuing their journey until they reached the corner of Robb and Albert Streets.
At that point, Green stopped his motorcycle, prompting Belgrave to pull over as well. Testimonies from eyewitnesses reveal that Green brandished a piece of iron and assaulted Belgrave by striking him on the back. In response, Belgrave retraced his steps to his vehicle, from which he procured a knife. A physical struggle ensued, with onlookers in the vicinity witnessing the confrontation escalate rapidly. During this altercation, Belgrave stabbed Green multiple times in the back, resulting in Green collapsing onto the street.
Emergency Medical Technicians arrived at the scene and transported Green to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for urgent medical attention. Unfortunately, despite efforts to revive him, medical professionals, including Dr Walcott, pronounced him dead shortly after his arrival. Following the stabbing, police officers acted swiftly, apprehending Belgrave at the scene and confiscating both the knife used in the attack and the iron rod that Green had wielded. CCTV footage from nearby cameras reportedly captured the dramatic encounter.
Belgrave remains in police custody, having offered a cautionary statement regarding the events that transpired. He claimed that he was minding his own business while driving before Green instigated the confrontation. Yet, as witnesses recounted, the escalation of words devolved into a physical clash that led to the tragic outcome of Green’s death. The investigation is being conducted by the Guyana Police Force, which has sought any additional information or footage that may shed light on the incident.
The body of Jamal Green is now awaiting a post-mortem exam currently at the mortuary of the Georgetown Public Hospital.
