Georgetown, Guyana — A questionable viral social media post alleging that a bag containing cash and multiple passports was stolen at the Marriott Hotel pool has ignited public controversy, not over the alleged theft itself, but over the racialized and unverified accusations it contains. Suspiciously, no name, nor contact information was posted, yet an emotional plea for missing passports was part of the post. The video logged more than 250k views.
The original post, published by a page known as “Guyana Express,” claims that unaccompanied children—“not even guests of the hotel”—were granted access to the pool area and are allegedly connected to the theft. video footage from someone’s camera was included, featuring three Black youths. No actual footage of the theft was provided, no police report has been made public, and no contact information was shared by the individual making the claim.
In response, many online commenters—while expressing sympathy for anyone who may have experienced a loss—have raised red flags about the post’s legitimacy and its dangerous implications.
Guyana Express PRESS ▶️ “My bag was stolen at the Marriott yesterday around 8 pm, containing cash and multiple passports. Shockingly, the hotel allowed unaccompanied children—who are not even guests of the hotel—to access the pool area freely. We now have video footage of these individuals and believe they are connected to the theft.
This situation has caused immense stress and difficulty, especially because of the stolen passports. I am urgently asking for the community’s help to locate the stolen documents and identify those involved.”
“Where is the evidence that a theft even occurred? Where is the police report? Why are you publishing the

faces of three children based on nothing but speculation?” one commenter asked. Another added, “This video proves absolutely nothing. What kind of twisted mindset takes a video of Black children in a pool area and then launches a public campaign to label them criminals—without a shred of proof?”
Some of the most troubling elements of the post lie in its comment section, where racially charged statements were left unmoderated. One individual accused “Black people” of always “playing the victim,” while others attempted to justify the targeting of the youths based on their clothing or presence in a luxury setting.
This growing backlash has prompted calls for an immediate response from the Marriott Hotel Georgetown. Members of the public are demanding answers to several critical questions:
•Did a theft actually occur on the premises as described?
•Was a report filed with the Guyana Police Force, and if so, when and by whom?
•Do the individuals in the circulated photo have any connection to the incident, or are they being wrongfully targeted?
•Is the hotel aware that its property is being used as the backdrop for what some describe as a “modern-day digital lynching”?
At a time when Guyana is striving to foster a more inclusive and just society, this incident serves as a sobering reminder that racial profiling remains an ugly and persistent reality, even in the digital age. Community members, human rights advocates, and concerned parents are calling for restraint, responsibility, and above all, truth.
If this incident is real, let it be handled through the proper legal channels, not by the court of public opinion fueled by racist innuendo. And if it is fabricated or exaggerated, those responsible must be held accountable for attempting to stir public outrage at the expense of innocent children.
Until answers are provided, the post remains nothing more than a dangerous piece of speculation dressed up as news.
