By Mark DaCosta-The Alliance For Change (AFC) has firmly condemned the recent hostile actions from Venezuela, calling on citizens of our country to remain resolute and vigilant amid the unfolding crisis. The party’s leader, Nigel Hughes, articulated this unwavering stance following a brazen assault on the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) on May 15, 2025. Members of the GDF were attacked during a routine patrol in the Eterinbang area of Region 1, with the offensive occurring at three different locations along the river, demonstrating a coordinated effort by Venezuelan forces.

This latest incident marks a significant increase in tension that reflects a deliberate pattern of aggression from our Venezuelan neighbours. Hughes highlighted the importance of supporting our armed forces, acknowledging their sacrifices to safeguard the territorial integrity of our nation. He stated, “The Alliance For Change reiterates the Party’s unmitigated and unreserved support to the defence of Guyana’s borders,” a sentiment that resonates strongly in light of the recent military confrontations.

The May 15 attack involved Venezuelan troops reportedly disguised in civilian clothing, a tactic reminiscent of the “little green men” methodology used during the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014. This disturbing development, occurring during a time of heightened geopolitical tension, underscores Venezuela’s continual disregard for Guyana’s sovereignty. The attacks on our soldiers, particularly as they were in uniform and clearly identifiable, constitute not just a violation of international norms but also an affront to Guyana’s national pride.

The assault came on the heels of several provocative actions by the Venezuelan government over the past six months. In December 2024, the inauguration of a bridge connecting the Venezuelan mainland to Ankoko Island signalled a troubling extension of Venezuelan claims over disputed territory. This was swiftly followed by a controversial announcement in January 2025 regarding upcoming elections for a fictitious region they refer to as “Guayana Esequiba.” This so-called election for a governor and legislative council is seen as a blatant attempt to assert claims over a territory recognised internationally as part of Guyana.

In February 2025, the situation escalated further with an attack involving gunfire directed at GDF soldiers on patrol in the Cuyuni River, where soldiers were nearly fatally wounded. In March, the aggression continued when a Venezuelan coast guard vessel, identified as the ABF Guaiquerí PO-11, breached our territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zone. These incidents reflect a disturbing pattern that the AFC has described as “an undeclared war against Guyana.”

The recent assault on May 15 has raised concerns about the intent and potential future actions of Venezuela. Hughes remarked, “The emerging pattern is clear and undeniable. It shows that a rogue state, in Venezuela, is waging an undeclared war against Guyana.” The deployment of military assets dressed in civilian attire clearly indicates a calculated strategy to obfuscate accountability while advancing territorial ambitions. By creating plausible deniability, Venezuela seeks to manipulate the narrative while continuing its aggressive posture against our homeland.

In light of these developments, the AFC is calling for immediate and decisive actions from the Guyanese government. Hughes stressed that this is not a time for political posturing, but rather for a united front to protect our homeland. He urged the government to consider expelling the Venezuelan Ambassador and recalling Guyana’s Ambassador in Caracas. Furthermore, the AFC demands the reconvening of the Foreign Relations Committee and the Bi-Partisan Border and National Security Committee to strengthen our national response to this existential threat.

The call for action is not merely a political stance; it is a fervent appeal to the patriotic sentiments of every Guyanese citizen. Hughes emphasised the need for an all-nation response, urging everyone to rally behind our armed forces and support their mission to safeguard our territories. He articulated, “We must stop being passive and turning the other cheek,” stressing that we must take concrete steps to defend our nation’s sovereignty.

As tensions continue to rise, the AFC’s call to unity gains urgency. Citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant and prepared, embodying a spirit of solidarity that has characterised our national identity for generations. The AFC stands ready to collaborate with the government, advocating for a strategic and robust approach to counter the escalating threats from Venezuela. Every citizen is being called upon to be part of the collective effort to defend our beloved homeland — our nation deserves nothing less.

In this volatile time, it is paramount that the people of our country come together to reinforce the spirit of resilience and patriotism, ensuring that our borders remain secure against any form of external aggression. As we stand on the precipice of potential conflict, the clarion call for unity, resolve, and action is more vital than ever. The future of our nation depends on us all rising to the occasion and embodying the essence of a proud and defiant Guyana.
