Akeem Stoby is a dedicated Reconciliation Officer and a passionate advocate for African culture, community, and youth empowerment. Stoby co-founded the University of Guyana African Cultural Association (UGACA) and served as its first President.

Additionally, he held other influential positions within the University of Guyana Students’ Society (UGSS) as Treasurer from 2022-2024 and represented the School of Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation (SEBI) as Faculty Representative. A leader at heart, Akeem also served as President of the SEBI Mentorship Club, guiding students toward success and promoting cultural pride on UG’s Turkeyen campus.

Passion for Education and Journey at the University of Guyana

Akeem’s journey at the University of Guyana (UG) was driven by a deep personal commitment to self-growth and a desire to honor his family. Despite facing financial barriers after secondary school, Stoby was determined to make his dream a reality. Years later, with faith and renewed purpose, Akeem enrolled at UG, trusting his  resilience to guide him forward.

His time at UG was marked by both challenges and achievements. Starting as a campus club representative, he rose through various leadership roles, ultimately creating UGACA with a friend to foster cultural awareness on campus. Balancing his Accountancy studies, a full-time job, and his many campus responsibilities was a challenge, yet Akeem remained steadfast. While at UG, he represented the youths of Guyana, when he served as the Shadow Minister of Public Service at the 8th Annual Youth Parliament and later as Sergeant-at-Arms at the 17th Commonwealth Youth Parliament.

Reflecting on his journey at the University of Guyana, Stoby is proud to be the first in his family to  achieve this milestone, inspiring his younger sister, who has followed in his footsteps, by enrolling at the University of Guyana.

Akeem encourages future UG students to seize all opportunities the university offers for growth and development. He believes UG prepares students for both the workforce and entrepreneurship.

“Form study groups and fully engage in the campus community, as these experiences can greatly enhance both personal and professional growth,” he added.
