By Mark DaCosta- The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) government has taken a significant step by formally requesting the assistance of the United States to pursue legal action against New York-based political activist Rickford Burke. The government accuses Burke of using social media to incite violence, fuel racial hostilities, and defame prominent Guyanese citizens. This move marks an escalation in the ongoing conflict between Burke and the administration led by President Irfaan Ali, with potential ramifications for Guyanese politics both at home and within the diaspora.
In a statement issued by the Attorney General’s Chambers, the government of Guyana revealed that it had lodged a comprehensive report against Burke with multiple US agencies, including the Department of Justice, the State Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). The report outlines a series of serious allegations, ranging from criminal incitement to domestic terrorism, all allegedly propagated through Burke’s social media platforms. The administration has urged US authorities to utilise all available legal mechanisms to ensure these allegations are thoroughly investigated and that criminal proceedings are initiated in both Guyana and the United States.
This request for international cooperation comes in direct response to a complaint filed by Burke with the FBI, in which he claimed that the Guyanese government was persecuting him. Burke alleged that the Ali administration was attempting to silence his activism by employing underhanded tactics, including sending Guyanese police officers to his Brooklyn residence to kidnap him. However, the Guyanese government has vehemently denied these accusations, offering a starkly different account of the events.
According to the administration, a police officer did indeed travel to the United States, but only to serve Burke with a summons in a lawful manner. The government detailed that the officer enlisted the services of a licensed process server, who legally delivered the summons while the officer maintained a considerable distance and recorded the process on video. The administration argues that Burke’s claims of persecution and kidnapping are not only false but also part of a broader strategy to discredit the government and gain sympathy from his supporters in the US.
Further intensifying the situation, the Guyanese government has accused Burke to at least one case of extortion, although specific details remain sparse. The administration has formally rejected Burke’s FBI complaint, characterising it as “baseless, false, and malicious,” and has expressed deep concern over what it sees as a deliberate attempt to damage Guyana’s international reputation. In a move to safeguard its standing, the government is now seeking legal advice from US-based attorneys to explore avenues for redress against Burke.
Burke, a well-known figure in the Guyanese diaspora, has dismissed the government’s allegations as entirely fabricated. He has described the administration’s statements as “mendacious” and has openly challenged Attorney General Anil Nandlall to present evidence supporting the extortion claims. Burke insists that his activism is rooted in his right to free speech, a right he believes is fully protected under US law. He has emphatically denied any involvement in criminal activities, asserting that he is an exemplary citizen who abides by the law.
In response to the government’s efforts to extradite him, Burke has defiantly stated, “I live in America, I have free speech, I don’t break the law, I am an outstanding, exemplary citizen of this country.” He has also accused the Guyanese government of being the true perpetrators of extortion, challenging them to produce any credible evidence of his alleged wrongdoing.
The conflict between Burke and the Ali administration highlights the deepening political and racial tensions within Guyana. Burke, an outspoken critic of the government, is viewed by many Afro-Guyanese as a champion of their rights, often calling out what he perceives as systemic corruption and racial bias within the current administration. His detractors, however, accuse him of inciting division and stoking violence, particularly through his social media posts.
The Guyanese government’s decision to involve US authorities has raised questions about the broader implications for freedom of speech and political dissent in Guyana. Critics argue that the administration’s actions reflect a pattern of silencing opposition voices, particularly those who are critical of the government’s policies. By seeking to prosecute Burke in both Guyana and the US, the government appears to be sending a clear message to its critics, both at home and abroad.
As the situation unfolds, much will depend on the response of US authorities to Guyana’s request for cooperation.
