Eid al-Adha Message 2026

The Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) extends warmest greetings and best wishes to the Muslim community in Guyana and throughout the Diaspora on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, celebrated on May 26, 2026.

Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, commemorates the unwavering faith, obedience and devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). It is a sacred observance that reminds humanity of the virtues of selflessness, compassion, generosity, humility and commitment to a higher purpose. These values remain as relevant today as they were centuries ago.

As Muslims gather with family, friends and communities in prayer and thanksgiving, GTUC encourages all Guyanese to reflect on the deeper meaning of sacrifice and service. At a time when many families continue to face economic challenges and uncertainty about the future, the spirit of Eid calls upon us to support one another, share with those in need and work collectively to build a more just and caring society.

The labour movement has long championed the principles of human dignity, fairness, solidarity and social justice. These ideals resonate strongly with the teachings of Eid al-Adha, which emphasise compassion for the vulnerable, integrity in leadership and responsibility towards one’s fellow citizens. A nation grows stronger when its people embrace empathy, mutual respect and a willingness to uplift each other.

As Guyana observes both its 60th Anniversary of Independence and Eid al-Adha, GTUC urges all Guyanese to recommit themselves to the values that unite us as a people—respect for diversity, equality of opportunity, national unity, justice and the pursuit of a society in which every citizen can live with dignity and security.

The Congress also calls on President Irfaan Ali, as a member of the Muslim faith and the holder of the nation’s highest office, to honour the enduring lessons of Eid al-Adha in the exercise of governance. The spirit of sacrifice, humility, fairness, compassion and accountability should not be confined to religious observance but should find expression in everyday leadership, public policy and engagement with all citizens, regardless of political affiliation, ethnicity, religion or social standing.

At a time when many Guyanese continue to struggle with the rising cost of living despite the country’s unprecedented wealth, and when concerns persist about political exclusion and social inequality, Eid al-Adha offers a timely reminder that true leadership is measured by service to the people, a commitment to justice, meaningful consultation and the willingness to place the national interest above partisan considerations.

The values embodied in this holy observance challenge all leaders and citizens alike to work towards a Guyana where prosperity is shared, opportunities are accessible to all, and every person is treated with dignity and respect.

May this blessed occasion bring peace to every home, strengthen family and community bonds, and inspire renewed faith, hope and goodwill throughout our nation.

Eid Mubarak to all.
