Mr. Nigel Hughes, Leader of the Alliance For Change (AFC), attended the Opening Day of the Annual District Sports Tournament of the Upper Mazaruni on Sunday. He was accompanied by Ms. Laura George, a native of Upper Mazaruni and recently appointed Technical Advisor on Indigenous Affairs to Hughes and the party.
The tournament is a cornerstone event for the communities, fostering unity and showcasing the best talent, skills, and discipline of the local teams. The party in a statement said its participation underscores commitment to engaging with all Guyanese communities, including the remote and often underserved indigenous populations.
Hughes, is said to be no stranger to the Upper Mazaruni people, given his history of advocacy and legal support for the region. He served as Legal Counsel for the plaintiffs of six Upper Mazaruni communities in a landmark land litigation case that spanned over twenty-four years, culminating in a decision in December 2022.
AFC said his ongoing dedication to these communities reflects his broader vision for a more inclusive and equitable Guyana.
During the visit the team listened and responded to the residents’ concerns and discussed the AFC’s plans to address the unique needs of the Upper Mazaruni and other indigenous regions.
The winning teams, both male and female, from Paruima, Waramadong, Kamarang/Warawatta, Kako, Jawalla, Omanaik/Imbaimadai, Chinoweing, and Phillipai, along with their satellite communities were congratulated were congratulated.
The AFC said it remains committed to engaging every Guyanese community, listening to their needs, and ensuring it is ready to serve all citizens when elected in 2025
