Imperative to remember our Indigenous communities lived on these lands for generations

I have taken note of the press release 11.07.2024 ( on the Facebook Page) made by Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) CEO Shaik Baksh and I wish to clarify my position regarding the issues raised by the residents of Kuru Kururu.

Firstly, I appreciate that Mr. Baksh recognises the importance of addressing community concerns. However, that the invitation extended to me by the Kuru Kururu residents was an important gesture of their commitment to ensuring their voices are heard. This invitation underscores their long-standing presence and connection to the land they have inhabited for over 40 years.

GWI, under the leadership of Shaik Baksh, has a fundamental duty to ensure wellbeing and access to clean water for all Guyanese citizens, including the indigenous population. “Whether the land belongs to the late Dr. Albert Basil Charles or not, these residents have established their homes and community there. GWI and the Government of Guyana must demonstrate respect and regard for our indigenous people and work to resolve their concerns in a fair and equitable manner.”

It is imperative to remember that our indigenous communities have lived on these lands for generations. This fact should be respected and factored into any discussions or decisions made regarding land use and community welfare. As the CEO of GWI and as representatives of the Government of Guyana, it is your duty to ensure that all Guyanese citizens are treated with the utmost respect.

Our indigenous citizens and all Guyanese deserve to have their issues heard and resolved in a manner that acknowledges their long history and contributions to our nation. It is essential for the government and all relevant bodies to demonstrate respect for these communities by addressing their needs and concerns promptly and appropriately.

I urge GWI and the Government of Guyana to engage constructively with the residents of Kuru Kururu, considering their long-standing presence and the legitimate concerns they have raised. Respect and consideration for our indigenous peoples should be a priority by any government of our national policies and practices.
