By Mark DaCosta- As Guyana develops, and technology and machines do many of the tasks previously done by human hands, sedentary lifestyles are becoming increasingly normal. Considering this, regular exercise is gaining greater importance if one wants to stay healthy. Medical professionals consistently say that engaging in physical activity on a regular basis offers numerous benefits that positively impact physical, mental, and emotional health.

Exercise is any intentional physical activity intended to enhance or maintain fitness and health. Exercise may be performed for various reasons, including weight control, strength improvement, muscle development, maintenance of cardiovascular health, honing athletic skills, or simply for enjoyment. Many people choose to exercise outdoors where they can congregate in groups, and socialise. This practice is viewed by experts as being particularly beneficial for mental health.

In terms of health benefits, usually, 2.5 hours of moderate-intensity exercise per week is recommended by researchers for reducing the risk of health issues. At the same time, even doing a small amount of exercise is better than doing none.

Regular exercise is a major contributor to good physical health. It helps to manage weight by burning calories and increasing metabolism. Activities such as walking, jogging, swimming, cycling, playing cricket, football, or other games strengthen the cardiovascular system, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease and high blood pressure. Exercise also improves muscle strength, flexibility, and bone density, reducing the likelihood of injuries and osteoporosis, particularly in older people. Additionally, it is known to boost the immune system, leading to a decreased susceptibility to infections.

Medical experts emphasise that exercise not only benefits the body but also has a proven impact on mental health. This is so because physical activity stimulates the release of endorphins, often referred to as “feel-good” hormones, which elevate mood and reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Regular exercise has been proven to enhance cognitive function, memory, and concentration. It has also been shown to promote better sleep patterns.

Leading a sedentary lifestyle is associated with an increased risk of chronic diseases. Regular exercise, on the other hand, has been shown to reduce the likelihood of developing various health conditions. Studies have demonstrated that physically active individuals have a lower risk of developing obesity, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer, and even Alzheimer’s disease. Regular exercise also helps to manage existing conditions such as arthritis and chronic pain that may be associated with health issues such as cancer.

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that: “Physical activity can lower the risk for developing chronic pain and assist in managing existing chronic pain. Individuals suffering from chronic pain can enjoy a number of benefits of physical activity and exercise. Physical activity reduces chronic pain by building muscle strength and flexibility, reducing fatigue, reducing pain sensitivity, and reducing inflammation. Research suggests that exercise may even be effective in reducing pain for difficult-to-treat conditions.”

Doctors note that contrary to what some people think, regular exercise actually boosts energy levels rather than depleting them. Engaging in physical activity – experts say – increases blood flow and oxygen supply to the muscles and organs – including the heart and brain –  resulting in increased energy and vitality. Regular exercise has also been linked to improved productivity and focus, making it an excellent lifelong habit for students and professionals of all ages.

Furthermore, exercise provides an opportunity for healthy social interactions. Joining group fitness classes, sports teams, or outdoor activities allows individuals to meet people in a healthy setting. Such actions may foster and enhance a sense of community and provide a support mechanism for people who may be experiencing grief or other challenges. Also, engaging in exercise with friends or family members can strengthen relationships and create shared experiences. Such activities, say experts, can improve communication skills, teamwork, and cooperation.

Another benefit is the  improvement of self-confidence and self-esteem. As individuals achieve their fitness goals and experience improvements in their physical abilities, they are more likely to develop a sense of accomplishment. As such, exercise also helps to improve body image and self-perception, leading to increased self-confidence. It is noteworthy that studies have shown reduced risks of eating disorders such as anorexia and bulemia among people who exercise.

Guyanese should take note of the fact that regular, healthy amounts of exercise is a powerful tool that positively impacts physical, mental, and emotional well-being. From improving physical health and longevity to enhancing mental clarity and self-confidence.

Interestingly, perhaps amusingly,  one notes that some Guyanese drive two miles to a gym, run four miles on a stationary treadmill, and drive two miles back to their homes. Perhaps, those people may consider taking in the sights, sounds, and fresh air while jogging outdoors rather than on a treadmill.

Guyanese are reminded that experts recommend consulting a doctor before beginning or significantly altering any exercise regimen.
