The Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) warns patrons and event organisers to be vigilant against drink spiking and the use of illicit drugs at social events.
CANU Director James Singh urged citizens to remain alert and responsible while partying, amid concerns surrounding excessive alcohol consumption, illicit substances and the possible spiking of drinks.
“It is deeply concerning to learn recently about illicit drugs, excessive alcohol use, and the possible spiking of drinks at social events. One pill, one drink, and one careless decision can change a life forever,” Singh said.
He warned that drugs can be concealed in drinks, pills, powders, vapes, candy and other substances, potentially causing overdose, unconsciousness, permanent injury, sexual vulnerability, violence or death.
Patrons are being advised not to accept drinks or substances from strangers, to never leave their drinks unattended and to seek immediate assistance if they suspect something is wrong.
Singh also called on event promoters and organisers to prioritise safety by maintaining visible security, preparing staff to respond to suspicious behaviour, ensuring medical assistance is accessible and encouraging safe transportation.
“A successful event is measured not only by the crowd or the music but also by whether everyone gets home safely,” he said.
