In the buzzing world of academia, where students strive to excel in their chosen fields, there are some remarkable individuals who defy convention and embrace diverse passions. Meet Ronxy James, a driven student who has embarked on a unique journey that seamlessly combines psychology and nursing studies and her newfound love for entrepreneurship. Ronxy has recently taken a bold step by launching a food business, named The Flavour House GY, registered as The Flavour House, that not only tantalises taste buds but also exemplifies the art of following one’s dreams. As a psychology and nursing student, Ronxy is no stranger to the challenges of balancing two demanding fields of study. The complexities of understanding human behaviour and the intricacies of healthcare have been her academic focus. However, amidst the stacks of textbooks and the rigours of clinical training, an unexpected passion began to flourish – a love for crafting culinary delights.
The idea of venturing into the culinary world began as an occasional experimentation in the kitchen and quickly transformed into a creative outlet that was impossible to ignore. James discovered that cooking not only brought joy to their own life but also had the potential to bring joy to others. “The name is a very funny story. One night my sister and I were making dinner and it was fries & sausage. I said to her, man this thing needs something to bring it up and I added what’s now known as the Flavour House Special white sauce. And we looked at each other joking while enjoying the dinner and she said “you know what would be funny? If you were to start a business and share these flavours.” We later deliberated hmm what would we call it? After much banter we settled that it must have Flavours attached. We included that it’s a from home business so why not the Flavour House?”
What sets the Flavour apart is the thoughtful incorporation of psychological and health concepts into their culinary creations. As a nursing student, Ronxy believes in the power of food to impact emotions and overall well-being. Drawing from their psychology studies, she curates dishes that evoke positive feelings, using colours, presentation, and ingredients
known to elevate mood and promote a sense of comfort.
Through the power of social media marketing and word-of-mouth, The Flavour House began to gain traction, as enthusiastic customers appreciated the delectable flavours, from Ronxy’s meals. Ronxy James is a firm believer of the quote, “I am not self made. I am customer made, family made, support made and most of all friendship made.”
Currently, she is a part-time library assistant, employed by the Ministry of Education (MoE) stationed at the Canje Secondary School. James, is also pursuing her Bsc in General Psychology at the American University of Peace Studies Inc, whilst simultaneously studying for her diploma in nursing through the Health Sciences Education, of the Ministry of Health. In September 2020, she graduated from the Guyana School of Agriculture.
She is an active and enthusiastic proud Rotaractor at the Rotaract Club of New Amsterdam. Outside of work, studies and entrepreneurship, her hobbies are volunteering, socialising with friends and book reading.
One of her biggest challenges is time management, since she is studying for her BSc in General Psychology whilst simultaneously studying nursing. It’s quite hard for her to do it all, especially when business hours clash with class hours. However over the years she has managed to work out her own mental time slot strategy that works for the most part. “After closing in the night I dedicate 2 hours to recap psychology and catch up on assignments/ research. For nursing I dedicate 9-10am for lectures. I usually begin orders from 10:30am to whenever orders are scheduled to be closed for the first phase,” she said.
Further she added: “It’s not often you come across a business that works in phases, however we do! Phase one orders are available 11:30am to 2pm to cater for lunch orders. Then 6:30pm to 9pm to cater for dinner orders and it works out pretty well for me.”
Ronxy said she got into business during a time where employment was an issue and the Covid-19 was here. “Regardless, I needed something to survive on, so I started my business with no prior knowledge except what I learnt from people around me and saw in movies.”
She placed in depth importance and value into her business via customer engagement.”
Most of my customers would say “please make my order with nuff love” because of the close engagement and understanding we’ve built,” Ronxy highlighted.
She noted that it’s quite fulfilling to satisfy people with detailed delicious and unique food that is essential to our survival at an affordable price.

Her biggest achievement of this business is the introduction of catering services which allows for a greater outreach through company contracts and personalised exposure. Ronxy noted that her culinary skills developed overtime. “My mother was a great caterer and I learnt early on that you must serve “salt, sweet & savoury” in order to satisfy all pleasure spots of the tongue. Hence all my items stand out exemplary. I follow this rule of thumb for cooking,” she said.
“Originality is one of your greatest strengths. Nobody can do it quite like you” is Ronxy’s advice for entrepreneurs.
In the future, she plans on expanding her business, whilst learning new skills that will further improve her business and its prospects in every regard.
