A spokesperson with the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC) on Tuesday expressed high appreciation for the recent move by the Central American Parliament (Parlacen) of revoking the permanent observer status of Taiwan’s legislative body and including the NPC as its permanent observer.

Spokesperson Xu Dong said it is a right choice that accords with the trend of history and our times.

Xu said that there is but one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. The Government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. The PRC’s sovereignty over Taiwan has been clearly recognized by the Cairo Declaration, the Potsdam Proclamation and United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758.

Taiwan has no other status in international law than being part of China, the spokesperson said, adding that the island is not entitled to join any international organization whose membership is confined to sovereign states.

The just move of the Parlacen on the Taiwan-related issue has amply illustrated that upholding the one-China principle serves the greater good of international relations, and accords with the will of the people and the irresistible trend of the times, Xu said.

It fully demonstrates the international community’s universal and firm commitment to the one-China principle, which is unshakable and unassailable, said the spokesperson, adding that it once again proves that any attempt to create “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan” is bound to fail.

Xu expressed a willingness to establish and enhance friendly exchanges and cooperation with the Parlacen on the basis of the one-China principle.

He pledged efforts to further promote exchanges and cooperation with the parliaments of relevant Central American countries, and to make fresh contributions to boosting bilateral relations and better benefiting the people of both sides.
