Chinese and Russian naval and aviation forces started a joint exercise on Thursday in the Sea of Japan.

The “Northern/Interaction-2023” exercise aligns with the annual cooperation plan between the Chinese and Russian militaries, and is taking place under the theme “Maintaining the Security of Strategic Maritime Channels.” The objective is to bolster the strategic coordination between the two militaries, strengthen their joint ability to uphold regional peace and stability, and effectively respond to security challenges, according to China’s Ministry of National Defense.

In a speech at the opening ceremony, Commander Qiu Wensheng stated that the exercise represents a concrete step towards fully implementing the important consensus reached by the two heads of state.

All participating officers and soldiers are committed to giving their utmost to enhance their collective capacity in safeguarding regional peace and stability and effectively addressing diverse security challenges through practical actions, he said.

Ten vessels and 30 aircraft have been deployed. During the next four days, the participating forces will mainly focus on conducting drills related to sea and air escorts, deterrence and repulsion, and anchorage defense among other courses.
