Last June 1st the Guyana Standard reported the Guyana Police Force identified the man killed along with prison escapee, Royden Williams, aka “Smallie”, as Odel Roberts, aka “Gulley Side”. The escapee and his alleged accomplice were reportedly cornered at 33 Miles, Bartica Potaro, in Region Seven (Cuyuni/Mazaruni).

Village Voice News reached out to Odel’s mom to hear the family’s side of the story. She told this publication her son was invited to work in the interior and ended up in prison. According to her, “he was set up.”

Newsroom reported Odel is known to the Police Force. He was previously charged with the May 1, 2015, murder of Sophia shopkeeper, Shawn Anys. However, in 2020, he was acquitted of the murder. He was also charged with trafficking in narcotics.

Odel’s mother told this publication it was reported in other media houses that her son was wanted but that wasn’t the case.

She said that he was a hardworking individual who worked in construction and transportation industries.

She also highlighted that, more than a month after his death, the family has not received his death certificate nor a police report. The family has since retained the services of attorney-at-lawyer, Mr. Nigel Hughes.
