Leonardo Turpin, a construction worker, is being treated for severe burns after coming into contact with a high-voltage cable while working at a Regent Street building on January 7.
Following the incident, the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) released the following statement.
At approximately 9:20 hrs a network disturbance disrupted service to customers in sections of Georgetown, the entire West Bank and West Coast Demerara.
Preliminary reports revealed that a worker came into contact with the Company’s network with a metal pole while working on a multi-storey building next door to Royal Jewel House on Regent Street, Georgetown.
The injured worker was rushed to the hospital with burns to his body as a result of this unfortunate and avoidable incident.
Once again, GPL implores contractors to observe the necessary safety precautions to avoid injury and unnecessary service disruptions.
Our teams have commenced restoration to affected areas.
END OF STATEMENT
Regarding the statement by GPL, one commentator wrote.
“Dear GPL, surely you could have chosen your words more carefully. A man was seriously injured, and may have been killed, yet your statement contains not one word of sympathy or wishes for his recovery. Additionally, have investigations been concluded so quickly? If not, how do you know that the incident was “avoidable?”
