Heavy rainfall in the Barima-Waini District has caused significant damage to the Matthews Ridge Airstrip and Taxiway forcing authorities to close the facilities for emergency repairs on Saturday.

The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), in a statement on Saturday, said works will commence immediately at the airstrip. “The Ministry [of Public Works] is working fervently to effect repairs to the runway and taxiway, and to restore normal air transport operations into Matthews Ridge at the earliest opportunity,” GCAA said.

According to the authority, all aircraft operators have been notified of the development. “The Ministry and the GCAA regret the inconvenience caused and remain committed to ensuring the safety of passengers and aircraft operations,” it said.
