Berbice farmer arrested with gun, marijuana

The Guyana Police Force said they caught 28-year-old farmer of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice with a .22 handgun and 35 grams of suspected cannabis.

The man was caught with the gun and cannabis by police ranks who were en route to an area in the Upper Berbice River at about 17:00 hrs.

The police said, ranks who were travelling in a speedboat, observed the 28-year-old man in an unpainted wooden boat in the Berbice river. Upon seeing the police, he jumped out of the boat and ran into some nearby bushes.

The ranks gave chase and managed to apprehend him a short distance away, a search was conducted on his person, stated the police, and  revealed a transparent plastic bag containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis in a haversack the man was wearing.

A further search unearthed a black .22 handgun in the man’s pants waist.

The suspect was told of the offence committed and he responded saying: “Officer hear wam, this is me bossman thing”.

The man was subsequently arrested and escorted to Kwakwani Police Station along with the suspected narcotics and firearm. The suspect remains in custody pending charges.
