The tragic accident, which claimed the life of 74-year-old Maria Williams of San Martin, Venezuela, occurred on Sunday, December 6, 2020 at around 16:00hrs.

In a statement, the Guyana Police Force said the alleged river mishap involved a canoe, which was being paddled by Victoria Williams of San Martin, and a Ballahoo, powered by a 75Hp Yamaha engine, which was driven by a male whose name was given as Sankar of San Martin, Venezuela. Maria Williams was an occupant in the canoe.

Police investigation thus far revealed that the canoe was being paddled from San Martin Landing to Eteringbang Landing, Cuyuni River when the Ballahoo, which was proceeding in the eastern direction collided with it.

The collision resulted in the occupants of the canoe falling into the river. “During the mishap it was reported that propeller of the engine chopped Maria Williams several times about her body, which caused her to received injuries,” the police reported.

The elderly woman was reportedly pulled from the river and rushed to the San Martin Landing to seek medical attention in Venezuela, however, she succumbed to her injuries about 20:00 hours on Sunday.

No arrest yet made. Investigation ongoing.
