Doris Rodney is a Guyanese American and owner of the Hills Restaurant in New York. Her passion for food and unyielding determination led her on a remarkable journey to success. Doris’ story is a testament to resilience and unwavering ambition. Growing up without the privileges of a lavish upbringing, Doris knew that she wanted more from life.
At a tender age, she discovered her love for cooking and realised that the key to people’s hearts lies in the joy of good food. Her entrepreneurial spirit ignited, and Doris started a unique venture, making sumptuous meals and positioning herself outside the airport in front of incoming flights to Guyana. Passengers were drawn to her delectable dishes, and within moments, her food was always sold out!
After moving to the United States, Doris continued to pursue her passion for cooking alongside her full-time job. On weekends, she invited people to her home to savor her mouthwatering creations, and it was an instant hit! For nearly two decades, Doris worked tirelessly, overcoming challenges, tears, and hardships, all while nurturing her lifelong dream of owning a restaurant.
In 2010, her dream finally became a reality when she proudly opened the doors to her first establishment, “The Hills Restaurant.” Located in Brooklyn, New York, this culinary haven specializes in Caribbean Cuisines with a delightful Guyanese twist. From curried king crab legs with potatoes to fluffy white rice, every dish at The Hills Restaurant is a celebration of the flavors of her homeland.
The resounding success of The Hills Restaurant spurred Doris to further heights. She also launched “The Hills Lounge,” an extension of the restaurant, which opened its doors in 2013, commemorating a significant milestone in her life – her 50th Birthday!
Beyond her culinary endeavors, Doris has a heart for giving back to her community. She passionately organises and hosts several “give-back” events, such as the annual Father’s Day “Recognition of Fathers In Our Community” Family Fun Day in the park, the heartfelt “Thank You To Our Supporters” Bash, and the joyous “Santa 4 The Kidz” Christmas party where toys are gifted to children aged 2 to 12 years old, fostering a sense of community and love.
Doris lives by the words of Virginia Woolf, “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well if one has not dined well.” Her love for her loyal customers and supporters shines through her culinary creations and community-oriented efforts. As she looks to the future, Doris remains committed to growing her business while continuing to provide a warm and welcoming space for all to enjoy great food and a sense of togetherness.
We invite you to experience the magic of The Hills Restaurant and be a part of Doris Rodney’s culinary dream. Savor the flavors of Guyanese cuisine with a Caribbean twist, and witness firsthand the passion and love infused into each dish.
